Hello there! My name is Joel. I have a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies - Education from Capilano University in North Vancouver. I started playing music at age 4 and have been teaching privately for 20+ years. It has been a privilege to spend the last 30 years performing in a variety of settings across Canada, the U.S. and Europe, both leading and supporting bands in bars, restaurants, clubs, churches and recording sessions. If I’m not playing or teaching music, you will most likely find me hiking, playing squash, skateboarding, or cooking for friends. Whether you are interested in guitar, drums, bass, vocals, songwriting, theory or improvisation… I am excited to share my experience with students of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels. While music fundamentals are important and valuable, I believe that every student has a personal relationship with music and try to take a more holistic approach to teaching. Having fun and learning songs you know and/or like mostly guide our process, even when it comes to learning music theory and the technical aspects of playing an instrument. I like many different styles of music, from Blues, Folk, Rock and Funk to Gospel and Jazz. I will do my best to tailor our lessons to help every student to discover and achieve their personal goals. I look forward to hearing from you and working together!
