Frequently asked questions

Upright bass typically works best from around age 11-12 or when a student has reached a manageable height. Our instructors tailor their approach to each student's age and experience, so whether you're enrolling a young beginner or picking lessons up again as an adult, everyone feels supported and challenged.
Prices vary by instructor and lesson length. A few factors that affect the quote you'll receive:
  • Your current skill level (beginner, intermediate, or conservatory prep)
  • Lesson duration (30, 45, or 60 minutes)
  • Delivery mode (in-home, online, or in-studio)
  • Your instructor's credentials and performance experience
Most of our Upright instructors offer membership discounts for weekly bookings, and your first lesson is free - a good moment to confirm pricing before enrolling.
To get started, a rental upright bass. Your trial lesson is a great time to go through this with your instructor - they'll tell you exactly what (if anything) you'll want on hand for the first few weeks.
Four things matter most when picking an instructor:
  • Credentials - a music degree, pedagogy training, or active performance career
  • Student reviews - real feedback from current and former students
  • Style match - an instructor experienced in the jazz or the goals you care about
  • Chemistry - a trial lesson to confirm they teach in a way that works for you or your child
Every Rockstar Music teacher is university-educated and background-checked, and your first Upright lesson is free - use it to confirm the fit before you enroll.
Yes. When you enroll with Rockstar Music you're matched with one Upright instructor who teaches you every week - no substitutes, no rotating schedule. Consistency is the single biggest factor in steady progress, which is why we build our whole model around it.

In the rare case that your instructor needs to leave our roster, we'll match you with a qualified replacement and invite you to take a free trial lesson with them first. You're never locked in with someone who isn't the right fit.

Lesson structure is matched to your goals rather than a single fixed curriculum. Our Upright instructors teach jazz, classical, bluegrass, and folk, and we pair each student with a teacher whose background fits the direction they want to go:
  • Students preparing for RCM exams work with classically-trained instructors who know the syllabus in detail
  • Students focused on performance, bands, or pop and rock repertoire work with teachers whose background fits that path
  • All of our instructors are trained in Music Will's modern band methodology, which blends real song repertoire with technique fundamentals from day one
Every student receives a written progress report every three months, so you always have a clear picture of where your child is growing and what they're working on next.
Reliability is one of the things we take most seriously - our instructors show up on time, every week. When a lesson has to move:
  • If your teacher cancels, we'll offer a make-up lesson at a time that works for you, or a lesson credit on your account
  • If you need to reschedule, you can do it yourself through the Rockstar Music app - no phone calls required
  • If you need extra flexibility, every Upright lesson is also available online via video call - many families switch between in-home and online week to week based on schedule
The app is also where you can see upcoming lessons, message your teacher directly, and manage billing and credits - everything in one place.
Progression at Rockstar Music has clear milestones and several pathways to perform. Most beginner upright bass students play their first walking line at 6-8 weeks, and most students reach comfortable intermediate playing in 6-18 months of weekly lessons; reaching advanced or exam-ready levels typically takes 3-5 years of steady work. Beyond the weekly lesson:
  • Recitals twice a year - friendly showcases where students perform for family and peers
  • Band programs for students who have been in weekly lessons for a year or more - small ensembles that bring in the social, collaborative side of music-making
  • RCM exam preparation for students studying violin, piano, voice, or guitar when that's the goal - your instructor will build the syllabus into your lessons
  • Performance opportunities at local events, festivals, and community celebrations throughout the year
Progress scales with practice quality more than quantity - your instructor sets milestones at the trial lesson and adjusts them as you grow. A child whose goal is to play a song at a family event follows a different path than a teen preparing for Grade 8 piano, and both are valid.
Our Upright teachers travel across Niagara and nearby communities, including Stoney Creek, Bridle Path, Glen Abbey, Aldershot, and Liberty Village. Use the region selector to see availability in your specific neighbourhood or contact us to confirm service in your area.
